BookSurge Authors Are Going for Gold in Award Competitions
With thousands of books coming to market each year, book awards and writing competitions are a great way to distinguish your book from the herd. At BookSurge, we strongly encourage authors to participate in these annual events as a means of creating buzz for your book, and in past newsletters, we've highlighted the best methods for entering your book. Today, we'd like to take a moment to recognize just a few authors who have found success in 2008 book award competitions.

Congratulations to all!
Dear Ms. Reid,
I am the winner in the health category of your 2008 awards. Maverick Health is more than a book – it is a message and a mission and a social movement whose time, I believe, is finally at hand.
I’m writing to let you know that my blog http://www.maverickhealth.com/blog/ is now officially up and running.
In addition, I have posted excerpts from my award-winning book, A Nurse Practitioner’s Guide to Smart Health Choices on my Web site. I am honored that The National Indie Excellence Book Awards recognized the quality and breadth of the book's content and thrilled that they validated its practical, real-world approach to wellness. The book is currently available for purchase exclusively on my Web site. Bulk purchases are also available at discount prices (http://www.maverickhealth.com/smarthealthchoices/).
Hello Ellen Reid,
I just wanted to drop a line saying thank you for picking my book as one of two fiction finalists in this year's awards. I think it's great what you're trying to do for indie books. When I was a kid I was blessed to work with and be mentored by the father of independent filmmaking, John Cassavetes. My award-winning book was made possible by his son, Nick Cassavetes, and it would be a pleasurable irony if I had anything to do with helping push indie books deeper into the spotlight. I hope to get the opportunity to meet you at BEA, and thanks again for believing in my book.
Peace and Blessings,
Michael Mehas

IDENTITY FACTOR EARNS TOP PLACE FINALIST AWARD IN 2008 NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE BOOK AWARDS
"To say this is satisfying is an understatement," says James. "Over and over, I hear how trends in fiction have changed, that geopolitical thrillers are out and suburban thrillers are in. So when I received news from NIEA director Ellen Reid that The Identity Factor had been honored with a finalist award, I was jumping up and down. With so many thousands of novels being published these days, to have my book score this high against such heavy competition is fantastic. I think it's time to party!"

Dear Ellen,
Then just consider this your first year of managing the book version of the Sundance Film Festival; you’re a hero, even if you have to learn it as you do it. And now look at the impact of Redford’s effort on the film industry!
A contest like this is a huge amount of work, so once again my thanks for going to all this trouble for the love of books and writers; all of you guys are changing the very structure of the publishing industry, from Dan Poynter to iUniverse to book shepherds to freelance editors, et al. I’ll look forward to meeting you at BEA.
Best wishes,
Patti Kokinos

"Thank you National Indie Excellence Awards for such prestigious awards and
valuable recognition. These awards validate and champion my books in a
phenomenal way and help open many doors, especially as we shop the film
version of The Circle of Olympians. The awards have brought me tremendous
exposure. I have been featured in local, national and international print
media, and have been invited by various groups to speak and sign books.
The best honor was to receive these awards from Ellen Reid and her panel of
industry professionals, and to have met Ellen at Book Expo America in Los
Angeles, CA. None of us manifest our dreams alone...thank you, Ellen Reid,
for helping make mine come true!"

For Book Expo, May 28th, 2008: At BookExpo, Los Angeles author, keynote speaker and personal coach Sourena Vasseghi accepts the award for Best Business Book of 2008 from the National Indie Excellence Awards for his book Love Your Life and It Will Love You Back.
Anyone who knows his remarkable story understands his challenges. Yet his adaptive skills and his infectious spirit led him to write this self-help book—the basis for his truly inspiring keynote speeches. Known as “the guy in the wheelchair,” Vasseghi applied to many public relations firms and entertainment industry companies after graduating from the University of Southern California with a degree in business and marketing. Despite numerous networking events and career fairs, Vasseghi was unable to secure employment.
“It was difficult for anyone to see how I would fit in, and I don’t blame them”, Vasseghi said. Confined to a wheelchair and saddled with a marked speech impediment, Sourena remarks “I saw a speech I gave with my interpreter on> You Tube last week, and thought to myself ‘Am I really THAT handicapped?’ So, I understand how daunting it might seem to hire someone like me in the
corporate world.”
Now his disappointment has become an extreme milestone, as he accepts an award (Best Business Book of 2008) for an industry that he didn’t fit into. He also received the Editor’s Choice Honorable Mention from the 2008 National Indie Excellence Awards.
What a wonderful way to start the day! My deepest appreciation to Indie
Excellence and the judges for selecting "Vegetables" as the winner in
the cookbook category.
Thank you,
Maria

As if that weren’t exciting enough, a week later the National Indie Excellence Awards were announced, and there was Angel Park, a finalist in Best New Fiction! In the competitive world of independent publishing, that’s high praise, and all of us with self-published books have Ellen Reid, publisher and book marketing expert, to thank for the recognition she’s brought us. It was Ellen’s idea to create a new contest to showcase independent publishers in the same way that independent filmmakers have been recognized as a force that has reshaped the film industry. Think “Sundance Film Festival” for BOOKS! So, for all aspiring writers out there, you CAN write what you really believe--and get published!!

The media room is great. The press release is just the kind of information that I can use on my websites, www.finepointeconsulting.com and www.pregnancywishes.com to promote my finalist designation and the Indie Excellence Awards. Thanks so much.
Warmest,
